I've always hope Google will someday add streets of Thailand to its map, then we can start using Google Local and derivative services that it entails. But seeing that after "US,":http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=chicago "Japan,":http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=hiroshima,+japan and "most of Europe,":http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=south+kensington,+london the next places Google decides to include are the "Moon":http://moon.google.com/ and "Mars,":http://www.google.com/mars/ I am constantly on the look out for other players to jump in.
Until recently, 'online' maps of Bangkok you could find are "very limiting":http://www.hoteltravel.com/thailand/bangkok/maps.htm that, in fact, the most useful ones are the "scanned version":http://bangkok.sawadee.com/map/index.htm of a detailed printed map. But yesterday I came across 2 potentially very useful services for this city.
*BKKpages*
"bkkpages":http://www.bkkpages.com/ has a cool flash-based map that includes street map schematic (no street names) and tons of "user-entered places.":http://www.bkkpages.com/directory The directory's main categories are restaurants, hotels, nightlife, shoppings, and other useful places like embassies & hospitals.
But god is in the details, they have plenty. The site feels "web two-ish":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2 eventhough it's table-based design. "Each place":http://www.bkkpages.com/eating-out/swiss/chesa has associated with it the street address, but the real useful part is their location based information. For example, it tells you the closest BTS & MRT stations and the distance from your house. (if you tell them where you live, or just use some arbitrary place as starting point) It tells you the estimated taxi fare. (which I'm sure is very rough calculation, but still nice) And they make good use of categories.
*Longdo Map*
"Longdo Map":http://map.longdo.com/ จาก "Metamedia":http://www.mm.co.th/ ไม่มีอะไรหวือหวาเหมือนอันข้างบน แต่ตอบคำถามในใจผมได้เกือบหมด นี่มัน Google Map ดีๆ นี่เอง
* ชื่อสถานที่และชื่อถนนเป็นภาษาไทยหมด
* มี "map mode":http://map.longdo.com/?lat=13.745236047122889&long=100.53240376983024&re... และ "sattelite mode":http://map.longdo.com/?gmap=1&lat=13.745221245218266&long=100.5324232578...
* ค้นหาได้ ตอนนี้หาได้เฉพาะชื่อสถานที่ ยังใช้ชื่อถนนไม่ได้
* ซูมเข้าออกด้วย scroll wheel ได้
* เพิ่มสถานที่ได้โดยผู้ใช้ (อันนี้คู่มือบอกว่าทำได้ด้วยการ right click) แต่ผมลองแล้วไม่มีอะไรเกิดขึ้นแฮะ

Thank you so much for your positive comments about BKKPages.com.
What is on site now is still very, very much a work in progress. We have a long way to go adding more functionality and detail to the map, a street finder, a larger coverage area and of course many, many more venues in more categories. Overall, although our progress is a little slower than we'd hoped for, we are happy with what is happening so far.
We very much hope when the (geographically based) "what's on" part of the site comes into action soon, it will become a much more complete, useful and "live" site.
You are right that the taxi fare feature is just intended as a very rough guide but we think it is accurate enough to be included... when the drivers "remember" to put the meter on that is. ;)

I thought it would take months! The way you add the street names in is quite clever and original. It took me a minute to see that, then it becomes very easy.

Hehehe, we thought it would take months, too!
We have been thinking through the many different ways that we could do the street names for a long time now, but all of the ideas came with their own set of (big) problems.
Thenm, just the other day this current idea came to us. It isn't perfect because - as you say - it isn't immediately obvious to the visitor what the blue dots are, but it is very easy "when they know how".
Another great thing about this method is that it is going to be straightfoward for us to translate the whole site into Thai when the time comes.
Thank you for your continued interest, K. Chris, we very much appreciate it.

actually, i just found an interesting google map of bangkok. they don have any streets, but somehow they have locations listed using a google satellite map that you can scroll. the web address is "bangkokrecorder.com,":http://www.bangkokrecorder.com/google-map/bangkok-map.html?NavigationBan... and then go to where they have the map. really cool stuff, hopefully soon they will add roads, and other locations.

Hi Josh
They did a good job integrating google maps with their content (restaurant reviews, etc.). But I see it more as a directory with map, rather than a map that is useful on their own. The way they develop it (as a "mash-up":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mashup_(web_application_hybrid) of google maps) makes it unlikely that there will be road names.
