สำหรับบริการ online bookmark ผมเป็นสมาชิกเหนียวแน่นของ "del.icio.us":http://del.icio.us อยู่หนึ่งปี จากที่ตอนแรกไม่ยอมใช้ เพราะหน้าตาไม่โดนใจ แต่ลองครั้งแรกหลังปีใหม่ 2005 ไม่กี่วันก็ติด เป็นเจ้าแรกที่ทำให้เห็นทางสว่าง ว่า social networking เอามาทำอะไรเข้าท่าๆ ได้นอกจาก friendster

แต่ผ่านมาจนถึงก่อนปีใหม่ 2006 del.icio.us ก็ล้าหลังคู่แข่งรายใหม่ๆ ไปเยอะ เพราะคนพัฒนามีอยู่คนเดียว หลังจากมองหาของใหม่ที่ถูกใจอยู่นาน ( "furl":http://furl.net / "spurl":http://www.spurl.net / "reddit":http://reddit.com / "clipmark":http://clipmarks.com / "de.lirio.us":http://de.lirio.us ) ก็ตกลงเปลี่ยนไปใช้ "My Web 2.0":http://myweb2.search.yahoo.com/ ของ Yahoo! (ที่เพิ่งซื้อ del.icio.us ไป...พร้อมยอดผู้ใช้ 3 แสนคน ... ราคากะกันในวงการประมาณ ... 20ล้านเหรียญ ... และจำได้ใช่มั๊ย ... มันมีคนพัฒนาคนเดียว)

MW2 มีข้อดีหลายอย่างเทียบกับ del.icio.us ตอนนั้น อันที่เป็นตัวตัดสินใจเลยคือตั้ง privacy setting ของแต่ละ link ได้ และ bookmarklet สำหรับเพิ่ม link ทำไว้ดี มี suggested tag กับ tag auto-completion

ข้อเเสียใหญ่ซึ่งพลาดไปเจอทีหลังคือ มันไม่มีวิธีให้ export link ทั้งหมดถ้าเกิดอยากจะย้ายไปใช้อย่างอื่น มีคนเคยถามเยอะ แต่คนพัฒนาก็แกล้งโง่ใน forum ทำเป็นไม่เข้าใจว่ามีประโยชน์อะไร เสียอารมณ์มาก เคยพยายามจะย้ายไปใช้ furl หลายทีแล้ว แต่ก็ติดตรงเอา link ตามไปด้วยไม่ได้ทุกครั้ง Yahoo! ไม่มี API เปิดสำหรับบริการนี้ ก็เลยไม่มีวิธีดิ้น สุดท้ายถ้ายิ่งรอนานก็ยิ่งติดหล่มลึกเข้าไปอีก ตัดสินใจย้ายซะวันนี้ล่ะ

ก่อนย้ายสำรวจตลาดอีกที เจอสองเจ้าใหม่ที่น่าสนใจคือ "diigo":http://www.diigo.com/ กับ "ma.gnolia":http://ma.gnolia.com มีความสามารถครบที่ต้องการ มีจุดต่างที่เป็นจุดขายคนละด้าน แต่ ma.gnolia ชนะไปค่อนข้างขาด เพราะ UI ได้ใจสุดๆ สวย ใช้ง่าย และใช้ white space ได้เจ๋งมาก

เลยเริ่มย้ายด้วยการ import link เดิม 400 กว่าอันจาก del.icio.us และย้าย 200 กว่าอันที่เหลือจาก My Web 2.0 ด้วยมือ (Firefox extension: "Auto Copy":http://autocopy.mozdev.org/ ช่วยประหยัด Ctrl-C ไปได้หลายร้อยครั้งวันนี้)

"Riya":http://www.riya.com promises big, and seems to have the technology to back it up. Photo sharing service with face recognition seems like a good idea, if you take a lot of party pictures.

But I don't take many peoples' picture, and hardly put them online because people can and does get offended for it. So, the novelty faded pretty quick for me.

Without the facial recognition, the rest of the package is pretty weak. It does offer tagging, with a special treatment given to location tagging. But the UI is slow, and it does a poor job at resampling large images. Flickr was much smoother in beta.

Book Folksonomy - Which to Use?

I wrote "before":http://ichris.ws/node/900 about the "social networking":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_networking sites I used for serveral things. I have found myself to still use them a lot, with an addtion of "43Places.":http://www.43places.com/person/chrisada The bunch now include most facet of me that is open for "folksonomy;":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folksonomy music, to-do's, places, photos. But one thing is still sorely missed. Books.

I have since tried a few of them, and there are a few! After a while, I am still undecided which one to invest my time populating. Here are the list:

Flock

"Flock":http://www.flock.com is available for download tonight as a developer preview version, and it's super super cool :!

Imagine this

* The usual Firefox goodness. (Many extensions work, many haven't yet. It's advertising itself as Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.8b5) Gecko/20051019 Flock/0.4 Firefox/1.0+)
* "del.icio.us":http://del.icio.us as integrated bookmark organizer (with very nice tag support and list view)
* an integrated blog editor working with all open API
* "Flickr":http://flickr.com integration
* feed discovery and reader (adding a bookmark automatically monitor its feed)
* full-text indexing of all pages you browsed (and "internal":http://sourceforge.net/projects/clucene/ search engine)

And imagine them working together pretty darn well for a supposedly pre-beta software. Some might say it's just firefox with skins and extensions. But my browsing experience is actually quite different, and in a better way. The extensions weren't feeling much as _part_ as it is with Flock. (the del.icio.us extension, for example)

And it's opensource, of course. Two thumbs up for those who lead the Flock.

The new Last.fm / Audioscrobbler

The "new site":http://www.last.fm had been running for a few days now, but only today had it been fast enough for me to get a smooth stream. The first and biggest overall change has to be the player. Yes, you are no longer playing the radio stream in your favorite player, but a small downloadable player that looks just like the old controller pane.

Last.fm player for windows

This is quite a bold move, but I think it had paid off. Bad responsiveness was my main gripe about the old interface, and the Last.fm player solved this quite admirably. And though I didn't have problem with the separate UI (the pop-up window and the music player), I have heard many complains.

The rest of the changes, by the ordered I noticed them:

* *Site design* I'm still partial to the new red/pink theme, but the new layout are more usable and seems to put a lot of importance in the various _list_ available on your profile page.
* *Tags* I'm a self confessed tag lover, but I'm not sure this will work for me. Apart from genre, I can't think of anything else as tags for songs. (Took a peek at the "tag chart":http://www.last.fm/charts/tag and peoples seem to have the same idea.) It's also not possible to tag the song you are currently playing. You have to go to that song's page and type in the tag. Not very usable if you ask me.
* *API* The Audioscrobbler API works much faster. (I use it through "AudioPod":http://projects.afterglo.ws/wiki/AudioPodHome to add songs I played on my iPod to the library)
* *Create Station* Now when you "enter some artist names,":http://www.last.fm/radio/ a statioin is generated and you start listening right away. The search result used to be _users who also like these artists,_ where you then have to choose to listen to one of their profile radio.
* *Set Price* It now costs $3 flat per month for upgraded account. They use to let you choose however much you think it's worth. I was paying $5 a month.
It now uses "HSBC CPI":http://www.ukbusiness.hsbc.com/hsbc/mrp/cards/secure-epayments/internet to process payments.
* *Recommendations* used to break down to album level, not is only artist level. This is a lost.

My last words are, it was already a great service before the upgrade. It still is very enjoyable and more stable.
